What is Lorem Ipsum?

The one-paragraph answer

The passage begins “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…” and looks like Latin, but it is not meaningful Latin. It was made by scrambling a real classical text — Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), written in 45 BC — cutting sentences apart and altering words until the meaning was gone. What remains has the rhythm, word lengths and letter distribution of natural language, which is exactly what a layout needs and all a layout should have before the real words arrive.

Where the words actually come from

The source is sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s treatise, a discussion of pleasure and pain. The famous opening is a mangled fragment of one sentence in section 32: “…neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…” — “nor is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain…”. The words dolorem ipsum (“pain itself”) lost their ending somewhere in transmission and became lorem ipsum. The translation page prints the original passage beside its standard English rendering.

The connection to Cicero was pinned down in the 1980s by Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, who noticed the rare word consectetur in the gibberish and traced it to the treatise. Until then the passage’s origin was genuinely obscure — it had simply been handed down through the printing trade.

A short history of standing in

• 1500s. By the usual account, an unknown printer scrambled the Cicero text to make a type specimen book. The passage survives because it was useful, not because anyone treasured it.
• 1960s. Letraset sold dry-transfer sheets of the passage for paste-up layout work, which carried it into advertising and print studios worldwide.
• 1980s. Aldus PageMaker shipped with Lorem Ipsum built in, putting it in front of the first generation of desktop publishers — and in front of McClintock.
• Today. It is the default filler of design tools, site builders and code editors, and the thing our generator produces in measured amounts.

Why not use real text as filler?

Because people read it. Show a client a homepage mocked up with real sentences and the feedback comes back about the sentences — a word they dislike, a claim they want to soften — while the spacing, hierarchy and layout the mockup exists to test go unexamined. Gibberish that merely looks like language removes the distraction. There is a second, quieter benefit: Lorem Ipsum’s word lengths resemble ordinary English copy closely enough that line breaks and column widths behave realistically under it.

The one rule of the craft: placeholder must never survive into production. A stray “dolor sit amet” on a live page is a rite of passage every team should skip — search your project for lorem before you ship.
