The short answer
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text in design and typesetting. This generator draws words from the traditional passage — itself a scrambled excerpt of Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC) — and assembles them into sentences and paragraphs of the exact size you ask for. Four paragraphs is the usual mockup default; character mode exists for buttons, cards and table cells where the count, not the look, is the constraint.
Ways to size your filler
- Paragraphs — for article bodies, landing pages and print layouts. Each paragraph runs three to six sentences, like real body copy.
- Sentences — for captions, cards and short blocks where a full paragraph is too much.
- Words — an exact word count, for templates and CMS fields with editorial limits.
- Characters — an exact character count, cut to the character. Expect the last word to be sliced mid-word; that is the honest behaviour of a hard limit, and it is what real content will do to your layout too.
Output formats
Plain text drops into any design tool. HTML wraps each paragraph in a <p> tag, ready to paste into a template. List turns every sentence into an <li> inside a <ul> — handy for nav menus, feature lists and footer columns. Switching formats never regenerates the text; the same words are simply re-wrapped.
Seeds: the same text, twice
Type anything into the seed field — a project name, a ticket number — and the generator becomes deterministic: the same seed with the same settings always produces the same text, on any machine. That is for team work: a designer in one file and a developer in another can hold byte-identical placeholder copy without sending files around. Leave the seed empty for a fresh draw every time.

Is this the real Lorem Ipsum text?
It is generated from the same word pool as the traditional passage and can open with the canonical first sentence, so it reads exactly like the classic text. If you need the traditional passage itself, verbatim, use the classic text page.
Does Lorem Ipsum mean anything?
Not as printed — it is deliberately scrambled. The underlying source is a real Latin text by Cicero about pleasure and pain; the translation page shows the original passage and its English rendering side by side.
Why not just use real copy as placeholder?
Because reviewers read it. Real words pull feedback toward the writing and away from the layout, spacing and hierarchy the mockup exists to test. Meaningless-but-Latin-shaped text keeps the eye on the design. More on the history page.
